Introduction to the course What is metabolism (catabolism, anabolism), How oxidation and reduction involved in metabolism. Use of coenzymes in oxidation reduction reactions. Role of electron transport chain in metabolism. Complexes of electron transport chain and their arrangement. Proteins of electron transport chain. Mechanism of coupling in oxidative phosphorylation. Respiratory chain inhibitors Metabolism of carbohydrates: digestion, absorption and transport in the cell. Glycolysis (conversion of six carbon sugar to 3-carbon glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate and 3-carbon glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate to pyruvate). Energy production by glycolysis. Citric acid pathway and glycogenesis. Metabolism of lipids: How lipids are catabolized? Formation of acetyl-CoA, transportation of fatty acids in side the mitochondria for oxidation.-oxidation of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. Ketone bodies. Synthesis of fatty acids. Protein metabolism: nitrification and de-nitrification. Biochemical reactions of amino acids (decarboxylation, deamination, transamination etc). What are essential amino acids, Glucogenic and Ketogenic amino acids. Urea cycle. Excretion of excess nitrogen. Nucleic Acids metabolism: Biosynthesis of purines. Anabolism of inosine monophosphate. How purines are catabolized? Anabolism of pyrimidine nucleotides. Pyrimidine break down. Enzymes involved in nucleic acid metabolism. Synthesis of uric acid.

Course Synopsis

This course is divided in different parts according to the biomolecules i.e., carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and nucleic acids. Metabolism of each biomolecule will be discuss in detail.

Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to understand how different biomolecules are metabolized and what are the intermediates which interlink different metabolic pathways together. Furthermore, they will be able to calculate amount of energy produced when molecules oxidized and which is good for health.
