Course Synopsis

The aim of the module is to develop procedures for analyzing the syntactic and phonological character of English so that these procedures may be used in teaching or research where the analysis of linguistic data is pre-requisite. It also examines the cross-linguistic similarities and variation in sounds, with special reference to English and Urdu.

Course Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will be able to • Speak English with correct pronunciation and prosodic patterns • Discuss issues in English phonetics and phonology • Discuss issues in teaching the pronunciation of English to Urdu learners. • Understand the principles of linguistic description • Understand and make use of corpora • Carry out a structural and functional description of the syntax of English • Carry out a structural and functional description of the phonology of English understand the distinction between the theoretical description of English and description of English for pedagogic purposes
