Course Synopsis

The aim of the module is to familiarize students with historical and current trends, methods and approaches in language teaching and learning. It aims to provide a framework, in part historical and in part pedagogic, from which to examine current working practices. Published materials will be critically examined and assessed to assist in establishing the context of 21st century language education and its relationship with Second Language Acquisition research. The module also seeks to encourage considerations of future directions in English language

• On successful completion of the course students will be able to: • Identify and describe specific language teaching approaches and methods • Critically review a variety of language teaching approaches and methods • Chart the historical progress of recent language teaching methodology • Position current methodological trends within an SLA framework • Critically review a variety of published ELT materials
