Course Synopsis
This course offers an introduction to, the key concepts of, the two rather vast disciplines of applied linguistics; Psycholinguistics and Sociolinguistics. Psycholinguistics is the study of cognitive process and representations underlying language use. It is concerned with the relationship between the human mind and language as it examines the processes that occur in brain while perceiving and producing both written and spoken discourse. While sociolinguistics deals with the relationship between language and society. It is the descriptive study of the effect of any and all aspects of society, including cultural norms, expectations, and context, on the way language is used, and society's effect on language. The knowledge of both these subjects is beneficial for an English language teacher as it provides wholesome perspectives into language teaching and learning.
