Course Synopsis
Solid state chemistry is also referred as materials chemistry; is the study of the nature, structure, and properties of solid phase materials, particularly, but not necessarily exclusively of, non-molecular solids. This is different from traditional areas of chemistry. Contents of this course include their properties, both amorphous and crystalline solids. Major application of solid material is in electronics so major amphasis of contents is related to conducting properties of material i.e. conductors, intrinsic conductors and insulators. Doping phenomenon explains n type and p type materials.
Aim of this course is to provide knowledge of surface- and colloids. surface and colloidal chemistry is a core subject of physical chemistry. Colloidal systems are composed of small particles dispersed in a medium. Furthermore, the course deals with structure and characteristics of the self-associated amphiphilic molecules, so-called surfactants. Associated colloids and aggregated material has lot of industrial and biological applications.. Self association phenomenon helps to explain many biological processes. Catalysis is another surface involving application especially in industries. This theoretical knowledge could help to explain different phenomena.
