Course Synopsis
The main aim of this course is to discuss & evaluate past and present foreign policies strategies of United States.
The course covers foreign policy decisions and approaches including U.S. involvement in World Wars I and II, the Cold War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Korean and Indochina Wars, the 2003 Iraq war, and the 2001–present "War on Terror." Furthermore it also involves U.S. national security policy, U.S. foreign economic policy, and U.S. policy on human rights and democracy overseas. The Problems like threats posed by Al Qaeda and its affiliates, and by ISIS/ISIL/Islamic State; the potential spread of weapons of mass destruction to states and non-state actors; possible threats emanating from Syria, Iran and Iraq; North Korean nuclear weapons; managing China's rise; the Ukraine/Russia conflict; climate change; threats to global public health; human rights will be part of course.
Course Learning Outcomes
Students will be able to
Identify the historical and cultural sources of US foreign policy and the key concepts and events from the history of US foreign relations.
Interpret contemporary foreign policy relationships and challenges and the role of the United States in world affairs.
Evaluate the competing theoretical models of foreign policy-making.
Explain how both the roles of the three branches of government and the activities of bureaucratic agencies affect foreign policy.
Analyze current international security challenges and policy options, and the tools of US economic statecraft.
Assess the role of non-governmental actors and public opinion on the making of foreign policy
