Course Synopsis

Boolean algebra and Logic Simplification: Boolean Operations and Expressions, Laws and Rules of Boolean Algebra, Boolean Analysis of logic circuits, Simplification using Boolean Algebra, Standard forms of Boolean Expressions, Boolean Expressions and Truth tables, The Karnaugh Map, Karnaugh map SOP Minimization, Karnaugh map POS Minimization. Combinational Logic: Basic Combinational Logic Circuits, Implementation of Combinational Logic, Universal property of NAND and NOR gates, Combinational Logic using NAND and NOR gates. Functions of Combinational Logic: Basic Adders, Decoders, Encoders, Code Convertors, Multiplexers, Demultiplexers Flip-Flops: The SR Flip-flop, JK Flip-flop, Master-Slave Flip-flop, D-type Flip-flop, T-type Flip-flop, Sequential Circuits. Registers and Counters: Shift Registers, Binary Counters, BCD Counters. Memory and Storage: Basics of Semiconductor Memory, Random-Access Memories (RAMs), Read-only Memories (ROMs), Programmable ROMs (PROMs and EPROMs) Introduction to Digital Signal Processing: Analog-to-Digital (A/D) and Digital-to-Analog (D/A) Conversion; an Introduction, R-2R ladder-type D/A converter, Weighted resistor-type D/A converter, Counter-type A/D converter, Tracking-type A/D converter, Successive-approximation A/D converter. Sweep Circuits: The General Features of Time-base Signal, Exponential sweep circuit, Transistor as a Sweep Generator. Operational Amplifier: Ideal Operational Amplifier, Differential Amplifier, Measurement of Operational Amplifier Parameters, Frequency Response of Operational Amplifier, Inverting and Non-inverting Amplifier, Operational Amplifier as Integrator and Differentiator.

Course Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of course, the students will be able to i) understand fundamental principles of analog and digital electronics. ii) analyze, design and implement combinational logic circuits. iii) analyze, design and implement sequential logic circuits. iv) classify different semiconductor memories. v) understand characteristics and applications of operational amplifier.
