Course Synopsis
Dietetics is chiefly concerned with the modification of diet in order to maintain health and prevention, management as well as treatment of various disease in order to lead a healthy lifestyle or achieve a specific health-related goal. Dietitians work in various capacities in the field of healthcare, food service, corporate setting, and educational arenas. Dietary modification to address medical issues involving dietary intake is a major part of dietetics.
Course Objectives:
• To understand the importance of diet therapy.
• To develop skills in planning and preparation of therapeutic diets using the food guides
• Education and counseling of patients and families.
Course Learning Outcomes
Outcomes:
• Students will demonstrate competence in the skills of assessment, planning, management and evaluation of foodservice, nutrition and dietetic services in institutional especially clinical dietetics settings
• Students will understand the role of nutrition in the causation, prevention, and treatment of diseases such as obesity, heart disease, hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, cancer, diabetes, iron deficiency anemia, and osteoporosis.
• Students will be able to design and implement individual or community food regimes tailored to physiological or medical needs and associated with health protection, the prevention of disease, human nutrition and diet.
