Course Contents
Introduction: Biosphere and biological resources. Evolution of biosphere. Systemic of life: Protobionts, origin of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell, unicellularity, multicellularity. Adaptation of organism on land. Geological time scale. Evolution as a force in diversity in life: Overview of earlier theories, Lamarckism, Darwinism, Modern concepts and origin of species. Nomenclature and classification systems (Artificial, Natural and phylogenetic): Classification of Prokaryotes, Protista, Fungi, Plants and Animals. Extinction: Types and causes of extinction.
PRACTICALS:
1. Study of kingdom Prokaryotae.
2. Study of the Eukaryotic cell.
3. Study of the kingdom Fungi.
4. Study of salient feature of kingdom Plantae (Bryophytes, Tracheophytes, Pteridophytes, Gymnosperms and Angiosperms).
5. Study of salient feature of kingdom Animalia (Invertebrates and Chordates).
6. Morphological characteristics of root, leaf, flower and fruit types.
7. Collection and Identification of local plants and animals.
