Course Contents
Introduction to various branches of chemistry. Atomic structure and basic concepts of chemical bonding, metals and non-metals Basic organic chemistry; introduction to functional groups (Alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alcohols, aldehydes and ketones, Carboxylic acids, esters, amines, aromatic compounds,) chemistry of pH and buffer, proteins and carbohydrates, Nuclear chemistry; Natural and artificial radioactivity, different types of radiations and their properties, detection of radiation, radioisotopes and their applications, Analytical chemistry; general principles of wet analytical chemistry (solution preparation, dilutions, standardization of solutions). Concept of percentage purity, brief view of modern analytical chemistry and analytical methods.
PRACTICALS
1. Preparation of distilled water.
2. Preparation of various solutions based concepts of molarity, ppm and percentage composition and their dilutions.
3. Detection of cations and anions in water samples based on titremetric analysis.
4. Qualitative detection of common organic compounds.
5. To study the pH conductivity, TSS of different water samples.
6. To determine acidity and alkalinity based on titration.
Course Learning Outcomes
This course will provide basic knowledge of chemical principles of solution preparation and analysis in environmental studies
and also develop the skills for relevance and problem salvation of environment concerning chemical approaches
