History and significance of environmental degradation, impact of modern life style on environmental quality, environmental conservation and sustainability, environmental education, institutions for protection of environment, interdisciplinary nature of environmental studies Chemicals in the environment and their impacts.chemical speciation, heavy metals, persistant organic pollutants, aflatoxins, pcbs, pesticides and detergents, household chemicals, solvents, impacts of chemicals on human health, crops and vegetation, buidings and monuments, aquatic life, biodiversity, visibility, concept of green chemistry.

Course Synopsis

Students would be able to learn various practices that lead to environmental pollution and its harmful effects on health and their environment. Then potential hazardous chemicals and their sources and effects will be discussed.

Course Learning Outcomes

After studying this course, the students would be able to understand the environment, its constituents, various factors that lead to the environmental pollution. The role of poverty in environment degradation. various hazardous chemicals in the environment, their sources and their effects on human beings as well as on plants and other organisms. The students will also be familiarized with the concept of green chemistry.
