Precipitation titration involving AgNO3 and KCl.  Potentiometry Determination of chloride in the presence of iodide and evaluation of Ksp of AgI and AgCl.  Use of some Organic Reagents for Gravimetric Estimation (a) 8-Hydroxyquinoline Al (III) Fe (III) (b) Nitron for nitrate estimation (c) Salicyladoxime for Ni (II) in the presence of Cu (II) (d) Anthranilic acid for Co (II) and Zn (II)  Spectrophotometric determinations Micro determination of Cr (III) by Di-phenylecarbazide. Determination of Fe (II) by 1-10 Phenanthroline. Determination of nitrites. Determination of Fe (III) by 8-hydroxyquinoline.  Flame photometry Estimation of Na, K and Ca in water and wastewater samples by flame photometer  Atomic absorption spectrometry: (subject to the availability of equipment) Estimation of Na, K, Ca, Mg, Co, Ni, and Zn. in various materials (e.g. food, tap water, and brass etc).  UV and FTIR Spectroscopy Characterization of at least five organic or organometallic compounds by IR and UV.

Course Synopsis

This course includes theoretical as well as practical learning of basic techniques used in inorganic chemistry for characterization. It starts with simple techniques like conductometry, potentiometry and gravimetry. It then moves to advance techniques like UV/Vis spectroscopy, FTIR, Flame photometry and atomic absorption spectrometry.

Course Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students would be able to characterize any unknown sample by using basic to advance techniques. They will be able to handle sophisticated instruments with required skill.
