Course Contents
Stereochemistry
Introduction; Optical isomerism: optical activity, chirality, symmetry elements and optical activity, relative and absolute configuration, R, S notation, methods of determining configuration, asymmetric synthesis, optical activity in biphenyls, allenes and spiro compounds, stereospecific and stereoselective reactions; Geometrical isomerism: Determination of configuration of geometrical isomers, Z, E convention cis- and trans- isomerism in cyclic systems; Conformational isomerism: Conformational analysis of monosubstituted cyclohexanes, disubstituted cyclohexanes and decalin systems.
Spectroscopy
Introduction to 1H-NMR and Mass Spectrometry; structure elucidation of different organic compounds by these techniques.
PRACTICALS:
Organic synthesis; at least two step synthesis.
Estimation of Amide and carboxylic and phenol groups.
Determination of saponification value and acid value in oil.
Course Synopsis
the course content is divided in two parts, one is stereo chemistry and other part contains characterization techniques. All types of stero and geometrical isomers, Relative and absolute configuration and element of symmetry is discussed.
mass spectroscopy and HNMR spectroscopy is discussed in detail. instrumentation and fragmentation pattern in mass spectroscopy is also included for this course. according to functional group, their characterization is discussed by using these two spectroscopic techniques
Course Learning Outcomes
this course provide all necessary contents which is required to learn stereochemistry of organic molecules. it is very helpful for students to learn characterization of known and unknown organic molecules through given spectra and peaks. they can identify the class of compound as well as their molecular structures.
