Course Synopsis

Physical Chemistry deals with different aspects of chemical reactions, so to study the reaction mechanism and energy involved in reaction, different aspects such as kinetics, thermodynamics, Quantum aspects are necessary.

Course Learning Outcomes

After studying this course, students will be able to • Explain the relationship between kinetic energy and temperature of a gas; between temperature and the velocity of a gas; and between molar mass and the velocity of a gas. • Describe the distribution of velocities for the particles in a gas sample and what factors affect this distribution. • Explain the concepts of work, power, and heat in thermodynamics; determine work and heat sign conventions; determine work involved with moving boundary systems (graphical and analytical methods). • Explain the laws of thermodynamics to determine the thermodynamic properties of substances. • Understand the basic concepts of chemical kinetics; how reaction rates are measured and represented in rate laws, and applications of chemical kinetics in studying enzyme mechanisms • Gain knowledge of basic quantum chemistry and atomic structures of atoms
