Course Contents
Basic Concepts in Chemical Bonding; Localized and delocalized bonding; Electron displacement effect, Nomenclature of Organic Compounds,
Open Chain: Preparation, properties and reactions of alkanes, alkenes and alkynes.
Closed Chain: Nomenclature, Synthesis, reactions of small and medium sized cycloalkanes.
Aromatic Compounds: Structure of benzene, aromaticity, orientation and reactivity, side chain reactions.
Alkyl Halides, Alcohols: Brief review of the physical properties, Phenols: Acidity, Ethers, Carbonyl Compounds; aldehydes and ketones, carboxylic Acids and Their Derivatives :Preparation, properties and reactions.
Stereochemistry; Isomerism, conformational isomerism in n-alkanes.
Course Synopsis
Students will learn and understand the basic principles of chemical bonding in organic molecules and are introduced to the concepts of functional groups, their nomenclature, preparation and reactivity under alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alkyl halides, alcohols, carboxylic acid, amines, ethers . They will also know about Isomerism and conformational isomerism of alkanes.
Course Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course students will be able to understand about various methods of preparation and reactions of stated functional groups.
