1. Advanced Treatment of Solutions The thermodynamic properties of solution. The solution process. Conditions of equilibrium between phases. Theoretical basis of Raoults equation. Deviation from ideal behavior. Compound formation and association. Separation of solid solutions. 2. Polymers: Classification of polymers; kinetics of condensation, addition and co-polymerisaiton reactions; Molecular mass distribution, determination of molecular masses by different methods. Analysis techniques. 3. Spectrophotometry: (i) Determination of percentage composition of two coloured components in solution. (ii) Study of kinetics of iodination of acetone and decomposition of benzene diazonium chloride. (iii) Predicting normal modes of vibration for simple molecules and interpretation of their IR Spectra.

Course Synopsis

Theories of solutions, thermodynamic properties of solutions. concept of equilibrium, phase, and discussion about conditions of phase equilibria. Raoult's law, its theoretical basis, application to ideal solutions, and deviations. Theories about association and dissociation of solute molecules in solutions. Solutions of solid components and discussion about different methods of their separation. Definition of polymers, examples, types, and discussion about the kinetics of different methods of polymerization. Concepts of different types of molecular masses of polymers and their methods of determination. Discussion of different techniques of analysis.

Course Learning Outcomes

In this course of study, students will learn about the modern theories of solution formation, concepts of ideal non-ideal solutions, Raoult's law and its importance. concepts of equilibrium and phases, conditions of different equilibria will be explained to the students. Solutions of solids and different methods of separation will be discussed. In the second part of the course of study, the students will learn about the concept of polymers, their classification, and kinetics of different methods of polymerization. Students will learn about different types of molecular masses of polymers and their determination by different methods. Students will be made clear about different techniques of analysis.
