Course Synopsis
Chapter No 1. CERAMIC FABRICATION PROCESSES: Introduction, Gas-Phase Reactions, Liquid Precursor Methods, Fabrication from Powders, Melt Casting, Production of Polycrystalline and Bio-Ceramic from Powders an overview.
Chapter No 2. SYNTHESIS OF POWDERS: Introduction, Powder, Powder synthesis Methods, Comminution (Roller, Jet and Ball Mills), Special Topic, Synthesis of Nano Scale Ceramic Powder.
Chapter No 3. POWDER CHARACTERIZATION: Introduction, Physical Characterization, Type of Particles, Particle size and particle size distribution, Particle Shape, Crystal Structure and Phase Composition, surface Structure, Surface Chemistry.
Chapter No 4. SCIENCE OF COLLOIDAL PROCESSING: Introduction, Types of Colloids, Attractive Surface Forces, Stabilization of Colloidal Suspension, Electrostatics Stabilization.
Chapter No 5. SOL GEL PROCESSING: Introduction, Types of Gels, Particulate Gels, Polymeric Gels, Effect of pH. Metal Alkoxides, Preparation of Metal Alkoxides, Thin Films and Coatings, Dip coating, Spin Coating.
Chapter No 6. FORMING OF CERAMICS: Introduction, Additives in ceramic forming, solvents, Dispersants, Binders, Plasticizers, Powder Methods. Heat Treatment and Microstructure Development: Introduction, Solid State Sintering, Driving Force for sintering, Effect of Surface Curvature, Grain Growth and Coarsening, Sintering Practice by Heating Schedules, Particle and Green Compact Characteristics.
Course Learning Outcomes
After completing the course the student will be able to:
- Describe different approaches to how ceramic powders are prepared from solid and liquid precursors
- Describe nucleation and growth theory
- Describe how different inorganic and ceramic materials can be made by innovative methods
- Describe the principles of drying of ceramic green bodies and wet films
- Describe the principles of densification, grain growth and microstructure development in polycrystalline solids
- Explain the different steps of solid state and liquid phase sintering and be able to choose the optimal sintering conditions for a given material
- Describe the relation between micro/nanostructure and properties for a given material
- Be able to use the aquired knowledge on own research problems
