Course Synopsis
This module has its focus on the development, implementation and evaluation of the second
language curriculum. Topics include the origins of second language curriculum development,
syllabus design and curriculum development, needs analysis, situation analysis, planning goals
and learning outcomes, course planning and syllabus design, the role and design of instructional
materials, student assessment and programme evaluation. On completion of this subject, students
will be able to demonstrate a sound understanding of the second language curriculum, identify,
describe and critically evaluate different approaches to a key aspect of second language
curriculum development, and design a second language curriculum framework for a specific
audience and context.
Aims and Objectives:
The course aims to enable students to:
1. Outline major approaches to curriculum designing, implementation and its evaluation.
2. Explains different theoretical perspectives regarding curriculum and its evaluation.
3. To demonstrate how curriculum beliefs, relate to instructional practice including various
stages of curriculum development.
4. Discuss various curriculum evaluation models and their practical application for teachers.
5. Design and understand program evaluation models.
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to understand and develop knowledge of:
1. How to select and apply models of curriculum evaluation.
2. The different theoretical perspectives involved in designing and implementing curriculum
3. The different stages of curriculum development including establishing curriculum goals.
4. Division of different components of a curriculum including its overall design.
5. Principles of curriculum construction and their significance to curriculum planners.
6. Program Evaluation and its challenges.
