Course Synopsis

This module focuses on the key concepts and experiences in language and literacy policy and programming in Pakistan and the South Asia. Topics include: the activity of language planning; nations and national languages in historical and current language planning; the role of English, globalisation and population mobility in contemporary language planning; the evolution of language and literacy teaching programmes in different contexts; current issues in language education policy and planning; the interface between first and second language education; and the role of teachers in language policy and planning at school, region and national levels. Aims and Objectives: The course aims to enable students to: 1. Outline major theories of policy evaluation 2. Define terminology relevant to the language policy. 3. Discuss the apply effectively the language policy in educational setting 4. Discuss the nature and purpose of language policy 5. Discuss current issues and trends in the areas of language policy and planning.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to understand and develop knowledge of: 1. What are the definitions of the key terminologies of language policy and planning (differences and similarities) 2. The different types of language planning and their respective purposes 3.
