Course Synopsis
The course introduces theories and methodologies for the study of human discourse, or language
in use. Discourse history, assumptions and principles, verbal and nonverbal communication, as
well as society and culture's roles in a variety of discourse genres are discussed. Opportunities to
analyze both spoken and written discourse are offered.
Aims and Objectives:
The course aims to enable students to:
1. Understand the theories, concepts and various ideologies of discourse.
2. Develop link between varieties of discourse and its application in the society and in
routine conversations.
Course Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course students will be able to:
1. Differentiate various discourse patterns and their role in the development of
language.
2. Highlight and apply theories of discourse into the practical analysis of verbal and
non-verbal communication.
3. Create links between the theories and practices of human discourse.
4. Analyze various discourse patterns i.e. spoken and written.
