Course Synopsis

Postcolonial Studies deals with literature of the Empire and written in opposition to the Empire and geographically covers a terrain which spans across the time zones of the globe. The course is chiefly concerned with literature written in English. It is designed to enable post graduate students to critically scrutinize colonial relationship and resistance to colonial perspectives. Students will learn to see the rationale behind the demand for change in power via decolonization, and rewriting of dominant meanings of the colonized experience through expression. Students will understand why Postcolonial writers have always sought to undercut thematically and formally the discourses which supported colonization—the myths of power, the race classifications, and the imagery of subordination. The course materials selected to be taught in the class comprise different genres of literature such as novel, poetry, drama and prose. All the writings are profoundly marked by experiences of cultural exclusion and division under the Empire. These writings, belonging to the early stages of Postcolonial literature, can also be read as nationalist writings.

Course Learning Outcomes

This course aims to introduce students to a selection of literature and criticism generated by the colonizers and the colonized. Students will be able to participate meaningfully in the debate inaugurated by Post-Colonial Literary Studies. They will be able to identify the common thematic concerns and stylistic features in the cross continental voices of the Empire. They will also be able to recognize post-colonial literature and criticism as a distinct and significant addition to English Literary Studies.
