Course Synopsis

This course of syntax and semantics is designed for the pre-service teachers to gain an insight into the working patterns of English sentence structure and the meaning conveyed through those syntactical constructions. In the syntax part of the course, the theories related to the study of the internal structure of sentence are focused and the application of language rules in a descriptive type are elaborated for the pre-service teachers to hands-on analyse and synthesize the sentence structure of the English language by taking simple to complex sentences into consideration. The semantics section of the course deals with the various theories of the study of meaning by focusing on the construction and interpretation of meaning while pre-service teachers engage in the analysis of the different layers of meaning conveyed by identical utterances and become knowledgeable about how these utterances produce an effect on the sense-making of the overall meaning. Aims and Objectives: The course aims to enable students to: 1. Get insight into the role and structure of the sentences in the English language 2. Develop the habit of sense and meaning-making of the English utterances 3. Attain a certain ability to practise and produce effective sentences 4. Understand the meaning as it should be understood by a certain sentence/utterance
