Course Synopsis
Course Description:
This course offers an overview of theoretical and practical approaches to teaching young learners. It introduces students to social and psychological perspectives on foreign language acquisition and learning, to provide an understanding of how young learners learn and acquire foreign language such as the notion of the language acquisition device, the critical period hypothesis and social constructivist theories of language learning in young learners.
Aims and Objectives:
The course aims to enable students to:
1. Develop curriculum frameworks including syllabus and materials design and classroom methodologies for teaching young learners.
2. Emerge as reflective and responsive practitioners of teaching young learners in the EFL context.
Course Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of language development and acquisition in young learners.
2. Critically discuss principles and methodologies appropriate for teaching young learners.
3. Select and evaluate approaches and activities appropriate for teaching young learners.
4. Design language teaching materials appropriate for young learners.
5. Critically discuss issues related to assessment and evaluation of young learners.
