Course Synopsis
The course will enable students to develop an understanding about Modern Muslim World. It will require them to study in depth a number of key issues and conflicts and place them in their historical and intellectual contexts.
The course will contribute to the development of a systematic understanding of the relationship between Islam, politics and the state in the modern Muslim world, knowledge of which is crucial if one is to make sense of the 'religious revival' which is said to have occurred in the Muslim world, and the thinking behind theses such importance of his region for all great powers.
The course will aim to give students detailed and specific knowledge, informed by developments at the forefront of academic enquiry. It will contribute also to a wider understanding of key leadership in modern world.
Course Learning Outcomes
Students will develop a knowledge and understanding of: Key issues and concepts of renewal, reform and revival as espoused by leading political ideologues in the Muslim world over the past years.
The socio-economic political context of modern Muslim world.
Modern Muslim theoretical approaches to issues such as modernity, secularism and democracy.
The diversity of approaches within Muslim world discourse to issues such as reform, revival, leadership and government.
Sophisticated application of appropriate methods of critical analysis to key debates in modern Muslim world.
Researching evidence from a variety of primary and secondary sources.
