Course Contents
1. Research as an Inquiry in Social Settings: Ontological and Epistemological Review and Critique
Claims Positivist/Post-positivist Knowledge claims; Socially constructed knowledge claims; Advocacy Knowledge claims; Pragmatic Knowledge claims (Positivism; Critical Rationalism; Interpretivism; Critical Theory; Realism; Structuralism Theory; Feminism).
2. Claims leading to research approaches in Educational Research.
3. Approaches: Quantitative, Qualitative, Mixed-Method, and Action Research
Main preoccupations of
i) Quantitative researchers’ preoccupations- measurement, causality, generalization, replication.
ii) Qualitative researchers’ preoccupations- Seeing through the eyes of the respondents, description and the emphasis on context and on process, flexibility and lack of structure, concepts and theory grounded in data.
iii) Combining the quantitative and qualitative research –Mixed methods
iv) Action Research
