Definitions and Types of Hazards/Disasters: a) Natural Disasters (like, landslides, droughts, earthquakes, high temperature, floods, forest fires, volcanic eruptions, wind storms/hurricanes, tsunami etc.) b) Man-made Disasters (like technological disasters, war, terrorism, accidents (industrial and transportation etc.) c) Biological hazards (epidemics) 2. Understanding basic terminologies in Disaster Management: Hazards, Risk, Disaster, Vulnerability, Capacity, Resilience, Disaster Risk Reduction, Disaster Risk Management, Prevention, Mitigation, Preparedness. 3. Significance of Community based Disaster Risk Management 4. Disaster Management Cycle a) Preparedness b) Response c) Reconstruction d) Recovery e) Mitigation 5. Disaster Risk Assessment: a) Need for Community Involvement (Participatory Risk Assessment) b) Hazard Assessment c) Damage, loss and need Assessment d) Community Risk Assessment Tools 6. Assignments and Presentations on Major Disasters (including definitions, causes, risk and trends, vulnerable population, effects, mitigation strategies, case studies, major working organizations, etc.) a) Flood b) Earthquake c) Landslide d) Drought e) Fire (home & forest) f) War g) Terrorism h) Biological hazards i) Accidents (industrial, transportation, etc.) 7. Setting up a Public Awareness Program 8. Mobilizing Resources for CBDM Planning and Implementation 9. Building and sustaining CBDM Organizations and Trainings for CBOs 10. Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authorities in Pakistan a) NDMA b) PDMA c) DDMA d) FDMA Risk Reduction Training: Students receive Risk Reduction/First-Aid training (2 to3 days) from different organizations i.e., Rescue 1122, Red Crescent, PDMA, DDMA etc.

Course Synopsis

This course provides detailed understanding of different types of disaster (natural & man-made) which effect people and their livelihood, for example floods, earthquakes, wind storms, terrorism etc. Course consists on social work approaches and methods of public awareness to deal with these disasters. Students will study the emergency response, rehabilitation and reconstruction as post disaster phenomenon. Aims of this course is to make the students familiar with disaster causes their types and management keeping in view the welfare concept.

Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course students will: 1. Developed a sound understanding of the disaster and risk management strategies. 2. Be able to understand the ways to mobilize the community resources for disaster management. 3. Come out with improved study skills.
