Course Synopsis
This course is intended to teach that Modern art represents an evolving set of ideas among a number of painters, sculptors, writers, and performers who - both individually and collectively - sought new approaches to art-making. Although modern art began, in retrospect, around 1850 with the arrival of Realism. This course will also narrate to the students about approaches and styles of art were defined and redefined throughout the twentieth century. Practitioners of each new style were determined to develop a visual language that was both original and representative of the times.
Course Learning Outcomes
This course examines how the idea of "the modern" develops in the mid of the 19th century in European art, literature and philosophy, and how modern art rebelled the previous conventional practices. The study of the modern art history is crucial for the understanding of the cultural changes influenced by the social and political circumstances of that time. The course lays emphasis on the modern movements of the West and teach the students how the style and technique of painting transformed with the developing philosophical and psychological theories.
