Course Contents

The course will be delivered through a combination of lectures and site visits (where required) to give the students a hand on experience with building structures. The weekly lectures are divided to a build a proper scheme for students to understand the structural elements step by step from the fundamental to practical application. The students will be introduced to basic numerical to understand the calculations and design criteria for structural elements in their architectural designs. Course Outline: Types of the structural systems & sub-systems, Components of a structure, Loads on structure, Shear force and bending moments on beams, Types of footings for wall & columns, Design of foundation for walls, Design of columns, Design of beams, Loads on walls. Thickness of walls, Grid layout, Types of slabs, Large span systems, Plain & pitched roofs, Basements of residential projects and Water tanks ( Residential projects).

Course Synopsis

This course is intended to introduce the students with the initial steps required for laying out a plan structurally, Introduction to multiple types of structural systems and types of loads, their impacts and bending moments. The students will also be explained the development of FBM diagrams for shear stress and bending moments. Through tutorials , students will be made familiarized to thumb rules for foundations, beams, columns and walls, development of grids, Understanding the structural drawings (symbols and abbreviations) and Planning layouts of the building into core and shell according to the structural requirements.

Course Learning Outcomes

The students will be directed through the design process involving the prerequisites and provisions for proper structural mechanism. Upon competition of course, they will be able to understand the technical aspects of their design decisions and the thumb rules to follow in the initial design process. The assignments will help them to develop their technical understanding. At the end of this module, the students will be equipped enough to analyze, check and work on the layouts in correspondence to the building structures. The assignments, site visits, presentations and numerical work will improve the technical skills of the students.
