Course Contents
he general theme of this course is the introduction to the HVAC systems and lighting systems. The
course will enable the students to understand the MEP and lighting criteria, basic load calculations,
their types and installation provisions that are to be included within their designs for the
designated consultants for their proceedings. The students will learn the applications of different
HVAC and lighting systems so they can recommend a proper solution in terms of performance,
requirement and energy efficiency to their clients. Course Outline : Introduction to Indigenous ,
Vernacular And Intelligent Buildings, Introduction to HVAC system, Vocabulary of HVAC system,
Calculation of heat loads in a building, Ventilation strategies in a building, Air handling unit, Lecture
by HVAC expert on the HVAC design of multi-purpose buildings ,Introduction to Artificial Lighting In
Buildings, Day lighting strategies in buildings, Lighting layout of residential buildings , Lighting
layout of health care unit and Electrical Distribution In Buildings
Course Synopsis
This course is intended to direct students to design of services in a building. They will be exposed
to the initial steps of project scheme ,division of building into core and shells as per the design
requirements, sketch the basic plan / concept, provisions for service area in the building for HVAC ,
inspection of the appropriate wind flow allowed through the windows on the software, Locating
and adjusting the window to wall ratio according to the wind and sun direction for a better indoor
environment, Development of Technical drawings (symbols for HVAC), Development of Technical
drawings (symbols used for different types of lights ) and Planning layouts of the rooms according
the air vents and lights for creating an appropriate ambience according to the function of the room.
Course Learning Outcomes
On the completion of course , the students will be able to work through the design process involving
the building services, their prerequisites and the provisions required for any future working. They
will be able to explain the technical aspects of their design decisions and the thumb rules to follow
in the initial design process. The site visit with a specialist from the field will enable them to see the
site practices and observe the systems more closely. The assignments and case study project will
help them to develop their technical understanding. At the end of this module, the students will be
equipped enough to analyze and work on the layouts in correspondence to the building services.
The assignments, site visits , case study project , presentation and numerical work will improve the
technical skills of the under graduates.
