Course Contents

It deals with an in depth study of the principles of sustainability such as Material Domain, Economic Domain, Domain of life, Social Domain and Spiritual Domain with particular examples of the application of these principles on building designs, Net zero concept, Features of Zero energy Buildings, Building energy simulations, design of zero carbon buildings, Indoor air quality and Sick building syndrome,, Consolidation of Architectural Surfaces ,Conserving building material with reference to sustainability and recycling of building materials, Benefits of re-cycling, common recovered materials and the use of renewable sources of energy in buildings Photovoltaic, Wind Power, Micro-hydro, Fuel cells insulation, Passive solar, and Heat recovery

Course Synopsis

The students will study the principles of sustainability to limit use of Earth's inherent resources, to minimize waste, to cultivate land wisely and to provide quality work environments. The will learn Optimizing use of the sun, Improving indoor air quality, Using the land responsibly, creating high-performance and moisture-resistant houses and wisely using the Earth’s natural resources. They will learn to design zero carbon buildings, Conservation of wilderness areas, Recycling of building materials and Use of renewable sources of energy in buildings.

Course Learning Outcomes

This course will help students to identify the principles of sustainability in different domains particularly social, economic and material which can be applied while designing the buildings to protect the built environment. They will learn to maintain indoor air quality and to save the building from syndromes in the result of design complexities. They will be able to apply building simulations to know the energy consumptions and to attain comfortable level for the occupants. After studying the main contents, students will be able to design such buildings which will almost consume zero energy maintaining the comfort level of the occupants. This course will also focus on the different techniques to save energy being consumed in the building construction through reduce, reuse and recycling of energy resources.
