Physio chemical characteristics of solvents. Solute-solvent interaction(ions in solution), solvation of ions, preferential solvation. Thermodynamic properties of solute in bare solvents and mixed solvents. Transport properties of solutions, concept of association constant of ions in solution. Study of solute-solvent-solute interactions by spectroscopic techniques.

Course Synopsis

The purpose of this course is to provide understanding and be able to explain the general behavior of solutions providing knowledge of different parameters which affect solution properties like nature of solute, nature of solvent, behavior of different solvents, thermodynamics of solutions etc., Transport properties related to diffusion of solute molecules in solution. Association of molecules in terms of interaction among solute-solute molecules, solute-solvent molecues completely change properties of solution from true Solution to colloidal solutions. Solution chemistry itself being part of each branch of chemistry plays vital role in explaining different changes being take place.

Course Learning Outcomes

After completing the course, the student will be having following learning outcomes in terms of knowledge and skills (i)Knowledge The student can: • Explain types of solvents on the bases of their physicochemical properties • Define and explain role of nature of solute and solvents on solution properties. • Describe and explain thermodynamic properties of solution in bare solvent and mixed solvent systems. • Describe interactions between solvent and solute interms of ions and dipolar solute. • Describe diffusion phenomenon in terms of transport properties of solution. • Perform numeric calculations of physical-chemical quantities. • Lear about that which spectroscopic techniques could be used to study molecular interactions in solutions. (ii) Skill The students can, (a)valuate experimental data on the basis of theoretical knowledge of this course. (b)use relevant theory to analyse problems in practical work (c)explain relation among different parameters using graphical presentation.
