• Mughal miniature painting in Siyah Qalam • Persian miniature painting in Neem Rang • Pahari miniature painting in Neem Rang • Mughal miniature painting in Gadh Rang • Persian miniature painting in Gadh Rang • Pahari miniature painting in Gadh Rang • Self Portrait in Gadh Rang • Concept based miniature paintings with amalgamation of traditional technique and elements (Mini thesis) • Assessment through Presentations, discussions and Assignments 40 marks • Creative Practice/Studio Work 200 marks • Professional Practice (Group Show by students in the end of this course as a Mini Thesis Display with at least 10 works by each student) • A synopsis of 500 to 1000 words will be presented to propose the main thesis of Final Year (4th Prof. Visual Arts) along with mini thesis.

Course Synopsis

The course lays emphasis on imparting knowledge of traditional skills and techniques of miniature painting by studying and practicing the styles and conventions of masters from different schools. As part of the traditional training methods, students are taught to prepare their own tools and materials under the guidance of their instructors. The preparation of pigments and surfaces (Wasli, the paper used for miniature painting) is integral to the course. To understand the traditional style in its pure form, students will incorporate elements from Persian, Mughal and Kangra miniatures with a novel and conceptual approach that will also enhance their understanding of line, form, color and rendering (Purdakht). Previously taught techniques of Siyah Qalam and Gudrung will also be employed by the student to execute conceptual paintings. The course also integrates appreciation of contemporary Miniature art practices through gallery and studio visits, workshops and artists’ talks. Intense critical evaluations are conducted on a regular basis as a means to help develop an independent body of work in the final year.

Course Learning Outcomes

Students are encouraged to develop an awareness and sensibility of contemporary practices. The use of tradition along with contemporary techniques and visual tactile brings about a fusion that essentially becomes the essence of the ‘spirit of the times.’ Students will develop a repository of information about miniature art, including exhibitions, workshops, galleries and educational material. Evaluation of mini-thesis and Final thesis projects will be on the finesse of execution and conceptual content justified by the student. Students will be able to • Incorporate the themes and color symbolism with an understanding of the compositional layout and spatial relationship with regard to the tradition, • Understand both the practical and philosophical wisdom that lies within this ancient tradition, • Address the contemporary issues in relevance to the traditional practice.
