Course Synopsis

The course gives the students a solid foundation for modern Indian and Nigerian drama at university level through the analysis of distinctive play texts. The students will have the opportunity to explore the plays and they will be introduced to the critical skills required for the study of dramatic works. The students will have the opportunity to read play texts and to think about them as performance. The texts will be introduced individually and examined in relation to their critical, intellectual, historical, linguistic, and social contexts.

Course Learning Outcomes

The students should be able to: 1. Enrich their understanding of Girish Karnad and Wole Soyinka by considering the plays not only individually, but also in relation to each other. They will also be able to appreciate Indian and Nigerian contemporary theatre. 2. Consider the playwrights' dramatic language, their use of the stage, and, more generally, the various ways in which we, as modern readers, can approach plays written in different cultures. 3. Situate the body of writing in relation to some of the major political debates of the period, including issues of gender and human identity. 4. Work closely with the text, and explore what is happening dramatically -- it may be worth considering the entrances or exits, various dynamics in the drama, and movement and power relations. The students will be able to read, analyse, and evaluate drama and theatre. The students will be able to read, analyse, and evaluate drama and theatre. Discuss structure, plot, themes, characterization, and performance by using appropriate and effective literary methodology.
