Introductory Lecture ‘What is Design’. The lecture will be with slides to illustrate the point. It will be a general view of society and industry, how design thinking, or absence of it, is playing order or chaos in our society. How the authorities play with design. Outcome: The intension is that students will have the understanding of how design plays a major and utterly important role in our daily life and choices that we make. Lecture 2 with assignment Silhouette is the image having no details. Design also looks for simplest things. This lecture and the assignment will focus on silhouette images. Students will be shown examples of various silhouette images through slides, and then asked to make any object around them (within the class/room) in silhouette image. Outcome: The intension is that students will learn to eliminate all details in images and keep the recognition, an important value of design Lecture 3 with assignment. In lecture the emphasis would be on our understanding of proportions and mostly our judgment of size. The huge earth becomes a tiny point looking at the galaxy. The students will be asked to work with tiny points with 0.5 pointer or so and place them at a distance of 3 to 4 points. They will have to make whole square of around 4-5 inches randomly placing tiny dots. They will be asked NOT TO make any pattern or line in the assignment, just a plain textured square. Outcome: It is intended that students will learn to see minute visual differences Lecture 4 with assignment. The lecture will focus on variety of lines. Will focus on other visual of lines than the kinds of lines we see and use every day. Making of lines will be free to any patter except that the lines will not crass each other. Outcome: It is intended students will learn how to create an interesting pattern in spite of the strict compulsions. Lecture 5 with assignment. The lecture will focus on various shapes made by man and nature with their assigned meanings, with slides. How the round or square shape determine the meaning in a given setting to various set of people. The assignment will ask students to make four geometric shapes from colored paper and creatively place them in the given size. Outcome: Intended that students start learning to achieve the excellence, in creative field which very difficult. They are given to see and learn the difference between various works of their fellows and why one looks better than others, with same elements in a given space The next five exercises will be designed in way that students will enter into the arena of endless creative possibilities in shapes, lines, given space. Their medium would be coloured paper. Through critique of assignments they will be guided through slide shows to the standards achieved by professionals. Their job does not end if they ‘personally’ like the design made by them. They have to cater for a client and a user. In design profession no decision is taken on emotional level, every decision is taken on a calculated system. SECOND TERM In second term the focus is on 3D, fonts and colour assignments. Three Dimensional assignments are given on softer material, mostly with coloured paper and card board. Outcome: It is intended that students will experiment and learn some basic principles that govern the 3D things. Students are given freedom to use unseen forms and bring them to man’s use. The excellence lies in most experimental effort of the students. This way they will learn the importance of creative undertaking, they are advised (though difficult at this stage) to ignore what is already done in the market, or routine. They have to try extra-ordinary options in their solutions in design. Lectures one to three (second term) with slide show The lectures will focus on form and function of things made by mankind. Examples in slides will focus on important areas of process in making things. In the three assignments in 3D to follow after the lectures, students will be asked to design a goggle, a shoe and a cap out of coloured cardboard. They will be told that their output has to be away from the normally available in the market or magazines. It will be marked while they are wearing it. Outcome: The students are expected to learn the beauty of form and part of the functional process of things, which is going to give them an understanding of how design can bring good business, good opportunities and good fashion for public. Lecture four to six (second term) Next three assignment will be given on fonts and typography expecting students comprehension of letters ABC in English or Urdu alif bey pay. Since it is very important tool of communication, and difficult to achieve the anatomy of the letters corresponding to message, each student will have to undergo the training of basic form of anatomy of letters. Outcome: The students are expected to learn the basics of anatomy of letters and their functions in the daily communication as aesthetic forms. Lecture seven to ten. (second term) These lecture are reserved for colour experiments in design fields. First the discussion would be on basic, secondary and tertiary colours, later, the function and power of colour. Students will be illustrated through slides the magic of colours in historical perspective. They will be given assignments to explore these possibilities in today’s world of commercial competition. Outcome: It is expected that students will understand the play and effect of colours, in communication, textile, interiors and life.

Course Synopsis

They will learn how to apply principle of design according to specific composition. Outcome: - This assignment will provide a strong base for the future design development. The foundation course focuses on three areas: Practical design skills, design studio and design in context. The content is primarily skills based with strong commercial links to the creative industries and local employers, as well as focusing on the contextual aspects of design. The course aims to equip students with a relevant, through and up to date of the industry. (All assignments will be distributed to student in typed format, on A4 size. Students will be asked to write two sentences of their opinion (difficulties in assignments, what they learnt, or DID NOT learn any thing at all.) They will submit it with the assignment. This will work as a feed back for faculty to re-assess assignments. Skill of students is primary to this Department. Every assignment will follow a criticism on their works telling them how to SEE things.

Course Learning Outcomes

They will learn how to apply principle of design according to specific composition and the assignments will provide a strong base for the future design development. This is a studio (practical) class. Design is a profession and a creative sensibility that enables the students to learn how to contrive the available materials and things and put them to best use of mankind, industry and society, in aesthetics governed by the changing professional standards.
