Course Synopsis

This course provides an understanding of how gender and power are linked. It makes students develop an understanding of the role of civil society, women’s groups and political resistance. Different issues related to politics of sex, violence and exploitation will also be discussed. Various aspects of politics of culture and tradition will be highlighted, and the importance of Human Rights and Conventions will be covered. Finally, during the course students will be asked to keep current with worldwide news related to gender and politics. As particular news story or commentaries about women in the world become relevant for the topic of discussion of a given week. Additional space for this kind of discussions will be available. The objectives are to discuss the gendered nature of politics, contextualize and question patterns of male domination (Patriarchal Bargain). To understand the way gender, race, and class (multiculturalism) work together to structure the civil and human rights. Understanding of issues related to gender-based violence, from within a human rights framework. Interrogate feminist debates that expand political argument to issues related to surrogacy and abortion.

Course Learning Outcomes

1.Students will be able to do gender power analysis, and understand the forms of power. 2.Students will be able to understand public private discourse. 3.Students will be able to understand basic concept and historical background of civil society. 4.Better understanding will be developed regarding human rights and conventions.
