Basic Molecular Genetics Mechanisms: Structure of nucleic acids, DNA replication, RNA & Transcription, Protein synthesis. Mutagenesis and Cancer: Introduction to mutagenesis, Site directed mutagenesis, Tumor including Ti plasmids, Oncogenes and Cancer. Gene Cloning and Sequencing: An outline of DNA cloning methods, Cloning vectors including plasmids, bacteriophages, Cosmids and expression vectors, Gene splicing, Chromosome walking, Development of gene libraries, Gene sequencing, Potentials of recombinant DNA technology. DNA Amplification and Gel Electrophoresis: Introduction to DNA amplification and polymerase chain reaction (PCR), Gel electrophoresis of DNA, Pulse-field agarose gel electrophoresis. Transgenic Proteins, Organisms and Gene Therapies: Production of transgenic proteins, transgenic organisms and gene therapies, Restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLP) and disease detection. Molecular Genomics: Molecular definition of a gene, Analysis of gene structure and expression, inactivating the function of specific genes in eukaryotes, Human genome project. Practicals: Practicals related to course will be demonstrated and conducted

Course Synopsis

• To offer the students a good understanding of the basic principles of Molecular Biology applicable to all living organisms. • To make students realize that it is a subject of practical importance, contributing to both basic and applied research in , medicine, agriculture, pharmacy and food industry etc. • To recognize the role of Molecular Biology in contributing to both basic and applied research in all aspects of life. • To consolidate student’s training in Molecular Biology and related disciplines and encourage them to develop intellectual independence, critical thinking skills and versatility for problem solving. • To develop the practical abilities of students to enhance their observational skills and to use these skills for problem solving in practical life .
