Course Synopsis

This module builds on the module ELT Methodology, providing a firm foundation for future professional practice in the field of ELT/TESOL. The module is specifically designed for those with little or no substantial teaching experience, and includes a practical micro-teaching component. The module provides opportunities to explore and critically evaluate a range of approaches, concepts, theories, relevant research studies, and debates relating to syllabus, materials, and task design in ELT. The module aims to develop students’ abilities to evaluate, adapt and design syllabi, materials and tasks for use in their own teaching, to provide a forum for sharing students’ language teaching and learning experiences, and through this to develop students’ ability to explore appropriate solutions to professional issues.

Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module students should be able to specify key theories of syllabus, materials and task design in English Language Teaching (ELT) and explain how they relate to particular instructional practices; have clear insights into the concepts, theories and models underlying syllabus, materials and task design in ELT; have a comprehensive understanding of current developments in and debates about syllabus, materials and task design in ELT; understand the relevance of empirical and theoretical accounts of syllabus, materials and task design in English Language teaching; show critical awareness of issues of design and representation in published learning materials; evaluate syllabi, materials and teaching practices in their own professional and cultural contexts in the light of current theories.
