Skim a text at an advanced level for general meaning (main idea) by: 1) identifying introduction and conclusion 2) understanding paragraph structure; 3) recognizing topic sentences; 4) recognizing when the main idea has been rephrased; 5) being able to distinguish between the main idea and supporting details; 6) listing and writing the main ideas; 7) making a story outline or a time line. Week 6 Scan a text, read for specific information, and answer specific information in a limited amount of time at an advanced level. Read a text and answer basic comprehension questions about main idea, vocabulary, and important details in the form of multiple choice, true/false, and short answer questions at an advanced level. 1. Guess vocabulary from context by: o Recognizing clues (punctuation, example, comparison or contrast, definition, description, series, cause and effect, setting, and synonyms); o Recognizing prefixes, suffixes, and roots and discerning their meanings (mis-, pre-, im-, anthropo, poly, etc.). 2. Expand active vocabulary by: o Writing definitions; o using the words in a sentence; o looking up words in a monolingual dictionary; o recognizing that a word can have more than one meaning; o recognizing that certain suffixes give clues as to the part of speech. 3. Make inferences and be able to answer inference questions through multiple choice, true/false, and short answer formats at an advanced level. Week 7+8 Presentations on Reading Lessons Prepared by Students Week 9 • The importance of teaching listening comprehension in L2 learning • What is involved in listening comprehension? • Speech perception (e.g., sound discrimination, recognize stress patterns, intonation, pauses, etc.) Week 10 • Word recognition (e.g., recognize the sound pattern as a word, locate the word in the lexicon, retrieve lexical, grammatical and semantic information about the word, etc.) • Sentence processing (parsing; e.g., detect sentence constituents, building a structure frame, etc.) • Construct the literal meaning of the sentence (select the relevant meaning in case of ambiguous word) Week 11 • Hold the information in short-term memory • Recognize cohesive devices in discourse • Infer the implied meaning and intention Week 12 • Predict what is to be said • Decide how to respond • Receptive Listening • Constructive Listening • Collaborative Listening • Transformative Listening Week 13 • The role of listening in L1 and L2 learning • Listening strategies Week 14 • Ideas and Activities for Teaching Listening o Listening and Performing Actions and Operations o Listening and Transferring Information o Listening and Solving Problems o Listening, Evaluation, and Manipulating Information o Interactive Listening and Negotiating Meaning Through Questioning/Answering Routines o Listening for Enjoyment, Pleasure, and Sociability Week 15 • Materials development for listening strategies • Helping students understand spoken English • Pre listening, while listening, post listening WEEK 16 EXAM

Course Synopsis

Aim Reading Skills This is a reading course that builds and refines skills learned in ESL Reading. It integrates reading and critical thinking skills. Students will select and apply appropriate reading strategies to complete academic work. Aim Listening Skills is course is intended to train students to develop listening skills, through a variety of media and activities, in students who have some knowledge of English, but who are unable to comprehend the spoken language. A practical vocabulary, dealing with daily living as well as academic themes, is developed.
