Course Synopsis

Newtons laws, mechanics and its branches, mechanics of a single particle, mechanics of a system of particles, central forces, keplers laws of planetary motion, conversion of two body problem to single body problem, scattering cross section, Rutherford scattering formula, scattering in differet systems, Constraints, degree of freedom, De Alembert principle, lagrange equation, problem solving using lagrange formulation, technique of calculus of variation, Hamilton variational principle, Hamilton equations, canonical transformation, symplectic approach to canonical transformation.

Course Learning Outcomes

On the successful completion of this course students are able to understand newtanion, lagragian and Hamiltonian formulations. Students are able to do problems in mechanics using these formulations. Also they understand central forces and their laws, canonical transformation.
