Introduction to Environmental Impact Assessment ,Origin of EIA, EIA in the Sustainable development context, Purpose and aims of EIA, Legal requirements for Environmental Impact Assessment. International legal requirements (National Environmental Policy Act 1969 and Rio Declaration 1992), National legal requirements (Pakistan Environmental Protection Ordinance 1983, Pakistan Environmental Protection Act 1997, Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency (Review of IEE and EIA) Regulations 2000). Environmental Impact Assessment Procedures, Main stages in the EIA process (Consideration of alternatives, Screening, Scoping, Prediction and Mitigation, Management and Monitoring), Impact prediction and Assessment methodologies for conducting EIAs (Adhoc approach, Checklists, Matrix method, Networks, Modeling), Advantages and disadvantages of impact prediction methods, Public Consultation and Involvement, Key objectives of Public involvement in EIA, Identification of stakeholders, Methods of Public involvement, Advantages and Disadvantages of public involvement, Application of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) concepts and techniques in EIA. Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA).

Course Learning Outcomes

The course objectives are to: 1. Develop an understanding of Environmental Impact Assessment. 2. Provide information and knowledge on the legal requirements of Environmental Impact Assessment. 3. Develop skills for the impact prediction and assessment during the Environmental Impact Assessment process and impart training to formulate strategies to involve public in decision making process.
