Course Contents

1. The subject is studied with the reference to varied painting techniques. 2. In the final and professional year, students of Calligraphy Painting will explore assorted painting mediums, and will create their own writing style in painting. They will incorporate their knowledge and skill of calligraphy into their conceptual art. The content of their artwork will be subjective which will be expressed by employing various/single scripts, other art forms, textures and patterns. 3. Not only Aqlam al-sitta: Thuluth, Naskh, Muhaqqaq, Rehani, Tauqi and Riqqa along with the Persian script Nasta’lique will be mastered by students but they will exercise also in Dewani and Shikasta script on different surfaces. 4. Students will weekly attend a lecture about the historical significance of calligraphy and its modernization by the centuries. 5. Weekly written assignments will be done to learn and apply the tools of Research Methodology and practice to convert the concept in written form. 6. Students will learn the technicalities of architectural calligraphy and its application on other artifacts. 7. Calligraphy & painting workshops, Lectures, Seminars and Study tours will be the part of the course. 8. An assignment of 1000 words will support the Final thesis at the end of the year. 9.With an open opportunity, students are free to work in other supportive techniques to execute their final practical thesis a) Miniature b) Collage c) Mosaic d) Print Making e) Ceramics f) Or any type of 3-D art

Course Synopsis

The subject of Calligraphy is designed to introduce the technical and aesthetical aspects of Muslim art forms. For the students this subject will be a source to understand the formal, traditional and modern features of Islamic calligraphy and its significance in the contemporary age. The practice of writing with qalam provides skills of some specific calligraphic scripts including Aqlam al-sitta: Thuluth, Naskh, Muhaqqaq, Rehani, Tauqi and Riqqa and Nasta’lique, Dewani and Shikasta which provides a chance to explore them through varied art mediums. As skilled and expert calligraphers students will avail an opportunity to select a traditional script and modify into their own style which will be an addition and contribution in the field of Islamic arts.

Course Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to • Incorporate the traditional Islamic calligraphy in thematic compositions, • Identify and produce different styles of calligraphy, • Understand calligraphy as a lens through which to observe hand lettering as a fine art, • Critically evaluate, appreciate, assess and respect the art of handwritten letters. • Understand how to transform the idea from a Traditional to Contemporary as well as in Modern visual language.
