Course Synopsis

INTRODUCTION OF PLASMA Definition of plasma, occurrences of plasma in nature, Concept of temperature, Debye Shielding, The plasma parameters, Plasma Criteria, Applications of Plasma Physics. CONCEPT OF ELECTRIC AND MAGNETIC FIELDS IN PLASMA: Single particle motions in uniform electric and magnetic fields, Plasma particle motion in nonuniform electric and magnetic fields , Drifts, time constant and time varying electromagnetic fields, Cartesian, spherical and cylindrical co-ordinates. FLUID MODEL: Different forms of Maxwell equation, Wave propagation in plasmas, the concept of perturbations, Dispersion relations for electrostatic and electromagnetic modes, Electron waves, Langmuir waves, electromagnetic waves, O mode. extraordinary waves, Alfven waves, magnetosonic waves, R-L waves , Whistler waves. INTRODUCTION TO CONTROLLED FUSION: Basic Fusion reactions, reaction rates and power density, Radiation losses from plasmas and operational conditions
