Course Synopsis

Writing is a skill that is highly required nowadays.Therefore, teachers of English should be aware of not only the theoretical underpinnings of the writing tasks but also the practical procedures that contribute to the success of the writing lesson. Learners should be trained to develop different language sub-skills. The knowledge that they should develop range from handwriting skills and mechanics to the ability to produce a coherent writing.In addition, the course prepares the future English language teachers to develop skills and knowledge of error analysis in students' written work in English language. The basic knowledge that learners should develop in the writing lesson include: 1. The different types of writing activities 2. Writing as a tool for learning 3. Writing as a major syllabus component. 4. Teaching writing as a product, as a process, and as a genre.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to understand and develop knowledge and competence of: 1. teaching different types of writing genres to students at various levels 2. different modes of writing skills and error analysis 3. developing and designing writing skills courses 4. developing writing activities that facilitate in developing and enhancing English writing skills 5. analysing different types of errors in students' different types of written work and target areas (e.g.grammar, vocabulary, essays, composition etc.) 6. the inter-relatedness of error analysis, interlanguage and second language acquisition 7. assessing and evaluating written work and the relevant tests
