Course Synopsis

This course is an introductory drawing course designed to prepare students for study in all majors. Students develop basic drawing skills, including the ability to perceive and express visual relationships, organize a two-dimensional composition and depict and manipulate form, space and light. Students will learn to work from direct observation of still life, interior spaces, landscape and human figure. Pedagogy: Structure and Teaching Methodology Studio projects, demonstrations, lectures with visuals, trips to exhibitions, visiting artists, critiques, writing assignments. Evaluation and Grading Criteria The evaluation will take place at the end of each assignment in the form of juries conducted by a panel of at least three jurors. The following lines may be included in the grading criteria of each assignment: a) Courage to experiment b) Skill, neatness and precision c) Ability to use the given space creatively d) Presentation e) Behavior and participation in class and critique.

Course Learning Outcomes

• Develop the ability to perceive and measure special relationships. • Draw geometric and organic shapes in space. • Understand contrast in tone and texture. • Understand how light describes form and texture. • Become familiar with the visual elements of drawing (line, shape, value, texture, scale, space, etc.) • Understand the importance of composition, organization, placement and positive and negative space. • Describe form through correct proportion. • Understand and use linear perspective and other special systems. • Understand and use the vocabulary of drawing. • Be exposed to a variety of approaches to drawing, (style, technique, and medium e.g. pencils colours, pastels, charcoals, pen and ink, water colours etc.). • Develop critical judgment relating to drawing. • Become familiar with master and contemporary drawings. • Integrated skills and knowledge developed in other classes. This drawing course will be beneficial for the students in learning process of advance level courses as painting, graphics, photography, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, calligraphy, etc. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be skilled in: basic introduction for study in any two-dimensional or three- dimensional field of art, Observation in various subject areas such as still life, interiors, nature study, landscape, and abstraction.
