Course Synopsis

This course introduces students to the study of Political Economy as well as International Political Economy (IPE). The course focuses on the political foundations and consequences of the contemporary world economy. This course will employ some basic economic concepts that will be explained in the lectures and readings. Backgrounds in political science, international relations and economics would be very useful but not necessary to take the course as most of the concepts are from Economics. The course will survey the evolution of the international economic system since the Second World War, with particular reference to contemporary concerns, debates and issues. The course will analyze international and domestic explanations for these developments and also study some concepts from the Economy of Pakistan.

Course Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, students will be able to: • Understand how economic and political factors interact to create and determine the effect of policy • Think critically and analytically about policy problems and issues from a political economy perspective • Analyze policy problems using theories of political economy • Communicate information and analyses critically and effectively
