Introduction, Types of waste, classification and resources of solid wastes. Generation rate of solid waste. Composition of solid waste, Physical, chemical and biological characteristics of waste. Solid Waste Management (SWM) plan; Generation, Storage, Collection, Transfer and transportation, Recovery and processing, Treatment and disposal of municipal, industrial and agricultural waste. Integrated solid waste management, Management of hazardous wastes including hospital and nuclear wastes. Engineering solutions. Recycling Industry; Reuse and recycling of wastes (including plastic materials) and wastewater, Global and national perspectives of recycling industry. Composting; basic principles and technology, thermal treatment; Pyrolysis and Gassification, landfills; design and management, incineration of solid and liquid wastes. Waste minimization and waste hierarchy, Waste reduction and environment friendly control technologies. Cleaner production techniques National regulations and waste management. Course Learning Outcomes

This course aims to: 1. Impart knowledge to identify and categorize sources of wastes and to classify pollutants into physical and non-physical categories. 2. Introduce the issues of SWM in the environment and enlist different types of solid wastes. 3. Introduce the idea of cleaner production and environmental friendly products and make students aware of the recycling process, wastewater treatment process, emission and noise control in industries and solutions for resource utilization
