Course Synopsis

Art therapy students learn the various methods and skills needed to effectively counsel patients through creative self-expression. Students in this course explore the psychotherapy and art theories relevant to expressive therapy. Students work on their artistic skills and develop the skills necessary for self-expression and healing. The use of personal creativity to help patients with emotional and adjustment issues is explored.

Course Learning Outcomes

 To increase meaningful experiences in the current situation, to increase life satisfaction, as well as to increase leisure enjoyment.  To facilitate reminiscing and healing and to enrich appropriate sensory stimulation using texture, color, line, and composition.  To maintain a higher level of cognitive functioning by stimulated in use of descriptive vocabulary, recall, and meaning.  To provide additional emotional support and expression of emotions related to life situations and changes.  To provide a safe space for society to explore one's creativity in various art media and to explore interests. Ordering of experience visually and verbally.  To increase personal autonomy and motivation.  To improve abstract thinking through inter personal learning.  To enhance social interactive ability, self support and trust.  To build career as health practitioner.  Relate to others in a group, understanding of effect of self on others and relationships.  To develop creative imagination and improve spontaneity.  To cop awareness as well as withdrawal tendencies.
