Course Contents

1.Overview of Art in Pakistan with reference to the course outline and its aims and objectives. i) Introduction of Pala Painting, Company Painting, and The Bengal School in the Pre-partition period. 2.Overview of The Bengal school with reference to Nationalism. How and why this School of thought emerged and what was its philosophy? i) Abanindranath Tagore with be given emphases being the main figure of The Bengal School ii) Introduction of Abdur Rehman Chughtai will also given in continuation of the technique with few amendments after Post-Partition period. 3.Introduction of the Post-Partition period with reference to the pioneers of Pakistani art. i) Impact of Company paintings on the early days of Pakistani Art will be discussed with emphases on the style and works of Ustad Allah Bux 4.In continuation of the previous discussion, the list of pioneers will be shared with students. i) Abdur Rehman Chughtai, a follower of the Bengal School with his self developed style will be discussed with reference to his pre-partition and post-partition practice and transformation in subject matter. 5.Introduction of the Anna Molka Ahmed with reference to her influential contribution in the early days of Pakistani art. Her expressionistic style, subject and approach towards her surroundings will be discussed. 6.Introduction of Shakir Ali, a pioneer of Abstract Art/ Cubism in Pakistan. His contribution in the early days of Pakistan will be discussed being the most influential teacher and artist. 7.Introduction of Khalid Iqbal, a pioneer of Landscape painting who brought Realism in the art scene of Pakistan. 8.Introduction of Sadequain, a multi-talented artist considered to be the most innovative and genuine artist of Pakistan. 9.Introduction of Haji Sharif, a Traditional Miniature Painter from Patiala Family and his contribution towards keeping this art form alive and in practice at the National College of Arts 10.Introduction of Lahore Art Circle with reference to Punj Pyaray and their influential contribution in the 60's and 70's for bringing Modernism in the art scene of Pakistan 11.Introduction of the artists from 1980's and 1990's with reference to the understanding of socio-political changes brought by Dictatorship and Democracy. Emergence of different schools of thoughts will be discussed respectively. 12.Itroduction of Socio-politically Conscious Artists with reference to their work. 13.Introduction of Figurative Painters with reference to their work. 14.Introduction of Landscape and Cityscape Painters with reference to their work. 15.Introduction of Calligraphic Painters with reference to their work. 16.90's with the introduction of Conceptual Art. Contribution of Zahoor ul Akhlaq will be discussed who is responsible for the emergence of Conceptual Art at National College of Art with reference to his influence on the younger generation mainly on Miniature Painting. 17.The Art of Miniature Painting in Pakistan after 9/11 with reference to prominent contemporary artists. Change in context, dimension, extension of mediums, contemporary trends with incorporation of Socio-Political references will be discussed. Group discussion will be encouraged for comprehensive understanding of the changing world and its impact on Pakistani Contemporary art

Course Synopsis

1. This course provides up-to-date information about Art and artists in Pakistan after 1947. This subject intends to cultivate visual literacy of the contemporary art as well as the recent past of art in Pakistan and fulfills the needs of enduring personal enlightenment and a sound understanding with the art culture of Pakistan. 2. Students after each lecture will be given assignments on the same topic which will be discussed in the class and they will be given the time period of 1 week to complete the task before submission. visits to different museums located in Lahore will be taken place.

Course Learning Outcomes

Discussion on the Contemporary trends of art in Pakistan with reference to Internationally known artists Studio visit to any of the contemporary Pakistani artist for discussion on his/her art practice. Presentation by students and their assessment.
