Exploration and use of drawing and drafting tools, drawing and design conventions. Methods and types of graphic representation inclusive of architectural rendering, working towards a primary objective of space exploration through the model making techniques.

Course Synopsis

This course aims to identify and develop individual strengths in material investigation and interior model-making, and to develop an understanding of the significant role of 3D manual processes within a design context. Model-making will be approached as an intensely exploratory, experimental, and catalytic practice in which models act not only as communicative devices, but as conduits for exploring spatial ideas. Models complement drawings as a communication tool. They enable designers to work out and visualise their ideas in 3D before committing to a design. They also enable clients to gain an instant 3D overview of a building/space and understand the design intent. At the same time, Architectural Renderings are the mirror reflection of the ideas pertaining to designs showcasing different stages of design process. Architectural rendering is the conceptual illustration of an architectural/interior design. These illustrations allow students to inexpensively communicate a variety of design possibilities.

Course Learning Outcomes

Different kinds of models will be introduced: analytical model, conceptual model, working model, section model and presentation model. Students will build their own model during the course. They will explore how to determine scale and size, choice of appropriate materials, level of abstraction and time planning. Armed with this knowledge, students will then identify a series of spatial precedents to work with as they develop a single model to exhibition standard, considering aspects of tectonic assembly, abstraction, representation, and scale. It is also possible to add lighting and take pictures of models to create realistic snapshots of areas within a space. Thus photographs of the models can contribute towards a portfolio. Students will be able to turn their design projects into architectural rendering, the creativity of their ideas will be obvious at first sight. As, through the renderings, students will be able to present their concepts and ideas more realistically which will be very helpful for them to satisfy their clients in the future.
