Course Contents

The rising gap between demand and supply of housing has now become a global phenomenon. However, the issue is especially pronounced in Pakistan.The high pacing growth of population and urbanisation in Pakistan does not adjust to provision of decent, stable, affordable housing. The last census, in 2017, documents a housing stock of 32.2 million, of which 39% is urban. The urban population is expected to grow by 2.3 million people per year over the next 20 years. This translates into the demand for 360,000 households, at 6.3 individuals per households. Poor access to affordable housing is also reflected in unequal home ownership: ownership remains concentrated in the top income bracket, leaving a limited supply of housing for low-income households. Housing insecurity among the bottom income strata of Pakistan has therefore become a compelling public policy issue. The dire need of low cost housing will be established in contextual knowledge of UN sustainable development goals with subsequent scenario in the South Asian region ; with final outlook on Pakistan . The contents of this course are strategically developed with a mindset to enable the emerging students of B-Arch Thesis Design Studio-I and to develop their socially responsible sense for making the built ,social and natural environment more sustainable to living standards of low end income groups of the society.

Course Synopsis

With a focus on achieving better housing for all, the front-line knowledge will be acquired to achieve competencies needed to tackle issues in housing and homelessness in Punjab and throughout the country.A most upto date debate on housing will be generated. This course is designed as a blend of teaching sessions on campus and a significant element of online study giving students the ideal learning experience in a format which is accessible and engaging. A comprehensive set of field surveys and data collection from institutions and local authorities will be conducted so that the students familiarize with government quarters and policies. The reinforcement of course topics will be asserted by a set of resaerchers and practitioners in housing sector who comprehensively cover the multi-disciplinary nature of housing, research, policy and practice.

Course Learning Outcomes

 The sustainability as in case of provision of housing facility to all income groups of society will have a comprehensive hike achieved in resource sharing mechanism and thus will achieve a more conducive social environment. Therefore the course is developed in a way that students are well versed with significance of low income housing and relevant architectural practises.  The laws , charters and institutional management of low cost income housing in urban , sub urban and rural fringes will be mandatory in course coverage.  In addition to above mentioned objectives the implementation of design strategies for low cost housing in preview of sectoral investments with reference o economic aspect of country will be accorded for students.  The professional practice in regard to sustainable design and construction practise in low cost housing sector will also be asserted in teaching the course
